Persons with dementia are very creative communicators, and everyone is different. I love finding new ways to connect with a person.
My education is in social work, and early on I connected with dementia specific programs. This worked well for me because it relies on creativity, rather than a prescribed order. What works for one person, might only work for that one. We have to use new innovative approaches based on the person’s current abilities.
We have to see them individually for who they are now, and what they do, then we find beauty in living life in the present moment.
Relationships are key.
When I was five years old my family moved in with my great grandmother in order to give her the support she needed to continue living in her home. My parents were wise enough to “let” the four of us young children be part of that care.
For almost four decades, it has been not only my profession, but also my passion, to offer supportive care and guidance to families living with progressive dementias. I have had the opportunity to help families learn and use safe creative and positive approaches in their interactions.
We have learned that laughter and a gentle touch and a sincere “I’m sorry” can be very real “save the day” approaches. And we learn over and over that each person is unique and valuable.
Living with dementia is about living.
